Last summer, I developed and collaborated with my friend and photographer, Justin Milhouse, on a visual titled "Sticks and Stones: A Black Woman's Narrative" to display the invisibility of black women by examining historical stereotypes and vitriol labels that have been predicated upon black women specifically. Used to silence, discriminate, misrepresent, oppress, commodify, and objectify, these are some of the labels black women have been burdened with and have had to metaphorically carry on our backs. However, despite Eurocentric biased standards of beauty, centuries of white supremacy, and socially constructed rhetoric used to undermine black beauty, black women remain resilient- understanding that beauty is a state of being that transcends physicality. The music in the visual is also an original composition, composed, written, and performed by myself as well.
